Coach Galera Takes Open Weight Gold in Rio, Bronze at AJP Grand Slam

Coach Galera had a huge weekend of competition in Rio de Janeiro, taking No-Gi open weight gold at the IBJJF Rio Winter Open and backing it up with Gi bronze at the AJP Grand Slam the very next day.
IBJJF Rio Winter Open
At the Rio Winter Open on 10 July, Galera had an opponent lined up in his own weight division, but they didn't show. Rather than take the walkover, he moved up to open weight to get real matches in. Three fights against bigger, heavier opponents, and he won every one of them for gold.
Galera competes under 67.5kg, so taking on and beating open weight opponents is a serious accomplishment. Giving away that much size and still winning three fights in a row is a statement of technique over everything else.

AJP Grand Slam Rio
The very next day, Galera lined up again at the AJP Grand Slam in Rio, this time in the Gi. He lost his second fight by a single point, the finest of margins, before coming back to win his third fight and take bronze.

Two events, back to back, on the biggest stage in Brazilian jiu-jitsu's home country. That's the kind of competitive schedule that keeps the coaching at Studio Galera sharp.
